Oxford Coffee Concerts Chamber Music Series @ The Holywell Music Room
Referring to concerts held at the Holywell Music Room in 1775-6, Oxford's Musical Society declared: 'In Compliance with the earnest Request of a very considerable number of Subscribers, it is hoped, that for the future, Gentlemen will not suffer Dogs to follow them to the Room, which are a great Annoyance to the Company'.
The Musical Society created a permanent orchestra for the Room, comprising in 1789 six violins, two violas, one cello, one double bass, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns and two singers.
The Holywell Music Room is now administered by the Faculty of Music during the university term, and during holidays by Wadham College on whose land it stands.

Francesco Geminiani: a detailed informative biography
London had become a major European music center, thanks in part to Handel, who had himself studied in Rome under Corelli and thus brought a measure of Italian musical style with him.
At this period of English musical life, as the essayist Roger North testified, Corelli's music had rapidly become the staple diet of players and music clubs alike: "Then came over Corelly's first consort that cleared the ground of all other sorts of musick whatsoever," wrote North in about 1726.
When considered together with his music and the implications of the alterations he made when reissuing collections such as Op.1 and 4, Geminiani's treatises represent an important source of post-Corellian performance practices.

HANDEL, G.F. - La Paix & La Rejouissance from Fireworks Music - arr. for String Quartet by Gerald Manning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Handel was commissioned to write the music for the “Fireworks Music” to celebrate the successful conclusion to the Peace of Aix la Chapelle in October 1748.
The music, which was publicly rehearsed in Vauxhall Gardens and the first performance some days later met with sensational success, and the music, soon became one of Handel’s most popular works.
As the music was to be performed in the open air Handel scored it for a military type band (trumpets, horns, oboes and bassoons) but added string parts on the occasions when it was performed in Concert Halls.

 First Look: Apple Lossless Audio
ITunes 4 already had the ability to import audio from a CD, convert audio to compressed, compact AAC or MP3 audio, burn music to CDs, and load files onto the iPod, but the best new feature in iTunes 4.5 is probably the new Apple Lossless encoder.
Arguably designed with the iTunes Music Store in mind, the Apple Lossless Codec is a compromise between the small but lossy encoding of AAC or MP3 and the large file sizes of pristine AIFF audio.
A similar audio codec is FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), mostly used for legal distribution of live music on the net, but according to Apple sources, their codec is faster and not based on FLAC.

The Classical period in Western music occurred in the second half of the 18th century.
Although the term classical music is used as a blanket term meaning all kinds of music in a certain tradition, it can also occasionally mean this particular era within that tradition.
Commonly given beginning and ending dates for the period are 1750 and 1825, although there was considerable overlap at both ends with preceding and following styles, as was true for all musical eras.
