American archaeology in Turkey is seen to be a component of US social and intellectual history, but it is a part of the social and intellectual history of Turkey as well.
But archaeology itself was privileged, with Atatürk promoting the study of the Hittites and even the Sumerians as possible ancestors of the Turks, a way of giving the Turkish people a stake in the antiquity of their country and region (Önder).
Archaeology should not be considered an elitist pursuit, but an essential component of the cultural heritage of every citizen of this country.

Bible Query on Old Testament Archaeology
Archaeology has provided a wealth of evidence on the reliability of the Bible.
Archaeology actually tells us that the city of Hazor was burned 1400 B.C, 1300 B.C. by the Egyptians, and 1230 B.C. Regardless of the bias of critics of the Bible, archaeology tells the story very precisely.
Can Archaeology Prove the Old Testament p.32 mentions that evidence of the burning was found that corresponds to about 1150 B.C. the Wycliffe Bible Dictionary p.1568-1569 says that the fortress-temple had walls 7 to 7 ½ feet thick, was 53 feet wide and 41 feet long, with the entrance on the long side.

British Archaeology, no 23, April 1997: News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
British archaeology is becoming `increasingly fragmented and underfunded', it is experiencing a `lowering of standards in fieldwork and research', and an `overall lack of co-ordination and common purpose'.
Several archaeologists at the meeting claimed that fieldwork standards had fallen since the advent of competitive tendering for rescue archaeology in 1990, partly because of the tendency of many developers `to accept the lowest bid' regardless of the quality of the tender.
Following the discussion, the CBA resolved to increase the visibility of the subject in the public eye; to draw public attention to the threats faced by archaeological sites and records; to continue to argue archaeology's case to central and local government; and to attempt to re-establish a sense of common purpose in the discipline.

Some of the most striking evidence comes from the site of the former Newcastle Infirmary, a `voluntary' hospital founded by philanthropists in 1751 for `The Sick and Lame Poor of the Counties of Northumberland and Durham' (see BA, April 1997).
It was an institution where individuals unable to afford the services of a private doctor could be treated, and was one of 29 such voluntary hospitals founded in Britain during the 18th century.
The skeletal remains from the Newcastle Infirmary burial ground and similar contemporary sites have therefore provided a fascinating insight into surgery, autopsy and anatomical dissection in an era when rapid advances were being made in clinical medicine, pathology and the anatomical sciences - and where documentary records are few and far between.

Nevertheless, historians have good reason to be cautious about historical generalisations by archaeologists and about their own use of archaeological material...: it would be a rash historian who totally accepted the conclusions of Garlake and Huffman with the same simple-minded trust as I myself accepted the conclusions of Summers and Robinson.
Even though the accumulation of evidence in archaeology is by nature-- as well as by the realities of funding--quite slow and irregular, it nevertheless occurs, a fact which historians tend to overlook.
