It is widely known that 99.9% of the proviral DNA of HIV present in cells is defective and cannot lead to infectious, viable virus (Piatak, M., et al., Science 259: 1749-1754, 1993; Sheppard, H. et al., Nature 364: 291-292, 1993).
However, the PCR test cannot distinguish between the trace amount of non-infectious viral debris that overwhelms the even smaller level of proviral DNA that could lead to the production of viral particles under the special laboratory conditions of coculture.
Even coculturing techniques failed to find infectious HIV in 53% of samples that have PCR viral load numbers in the hundreds of thousands (Piatak, M., et al., Science 259: 1749-1754, 1993).

The Newtonian Moment: Science and the Making of Modern Culture, an exhibition at The New York Public Library, tells the story of the incubation and diffusion of Newton's ideas, as well as the tensions and the often public (and nasty) clashes they engendered.
The exhibition includes a rich sampling of the ingenuity of contemporary savants as they sought to modify Newtonian mechanics or optics, and even make it compatible with elements of Descartes' vortex theory of planetary motion, according to which the planets are carried around the sun in a huge whirlpool of subtle matter.
The romantics violently rejected the "tyranny" of reason, railing that mathematical abstraction and the attempt to reduce all spheres of life to rules limited creativity, and deadened the emotions.

Olshansky, Carnes and Cassel (2) suggest "Conceivably… medical researchers may learn how to slow the rate of senescence itself, thereby postponing the onset of degenerative diseases and the cause of old-age mortality.
Toward that goal, many scientists working in the fields of evolutionary and molecular biology are now trying to learn why organisms become senescent." A recent edition of Science (2000; 289:1754-1757) (3) describes how certain cells can be steered into new career paths, something that no one had considered possible.
