American poetry remains a hybrid, a literature that tries to separate itself from the tradition of English literature even as it adds to and alters that tradition.
In 1746 Lucy Terry, a slave in Massachusetts who was also educated by her owner, wrote the first poem to be published by a fl American: "Bar's Fight." The poem, which was not published until 1855, describes the victims and survivors of a Native American raid against settlers.
