 Book Review
Harold Kirker's thoughtful interpretation of California architecture, first published in 1960 by the Huntington Library, has now been reprinted in a high quality paperback edition with new prefatory remarks by the author.
He concluded that during that period "California was an architectural frontier" characterized by "architectural colonialism." Each group of Europeans or Americans who came to California implanted its own architectural styles, rather than adapt to local conditions and produce a style with regional distinctiveness.
Kirker termed his work a "social history of architecture" which "is not the direct study of an art, but the indirect study of a civilization."

The drawings illustrate the subtle changes in architecture that occurred beginning with the Spanish in 1769 and ending with the Americans in the early twentieth century.
It would have been more useful to explain the changes that occurred in Spanish architecture from 1769 to 1822 and continue with the influences brought about by the later Mexican and American periods.

Almost paradoxically, the quest for a timeless mode of expression (the ‘true style’, as it was then called) involved strongly divergent approaches towards design that were strikingly focused on the Greco-Roman debate.
On the one hand, there was a commitment to a radical severity of expression, associated with the Platonic Ideal, as well as to such criteria as the functional and the primitive, which were particularly identified with early Greek art and architecture.
