I argue that Hays's unique self-education during the 1780s provides the missing link in our appreciation of her part in the collaboration with Wollstonecraft and Godwin in the 1790s as the trio initiates a new conversation about gender and sex.
In this essay, I briefly trace the trajectory of Hays's intellectual evolution, focusing on Robert Robinson's tutelage from 1781 to her initial encounters with Wollstonecraft on the eve of her departure for revolutionary Paris and all that lay ahead.
The principal influence on Hays's intellectual development during the 1780s was the Reverend Robert Robinson (1735-1790), to his admirers distinguished by "his earnest love of truth, and laborious search after it," as well his espousal of "unlimited toleration" (qtd.

I also did not use notariial registers from Torbec, Cab Tiburon, and Cotteaux in the 1780s; these areas were part of the Cayes district and their residents often used Cayes notaries, though in the 1770s and 1780s, more notaries emerged in these parishes.
