 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788)
Most of his music is not as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the Eighteenth Century, C.P.E. Bach was known as the "Great Bach." He was the second eldest and the most famous of J.S. Bach's sons.
Proposals for a reorganization of church music in Hamburg meant that a successor to her husband was not appointed until autumn 1789, and it was only in December that year that she handed the post over to C.F.G. Schwencke, who had been elected the previous October.
In his music, there are often bold harmonic progressions, interjected sections in contrasting tempo, seamless transitions between movements, abrupt changes of mood, and frequent rambling passages that seem to be searching for a goal.

The idea for the CD grew from the 1993 "Music in the Age of Jefferson" concert organized and performed by Rob Turner in late March of that year for a National Public Radio celebration of Jefferson's 250th birthday on April 13.
Using Jefferson's collection of music in the University of Virginia's McIntire Music Library in Cabell Hall, Turner, instructor in baroque flute and recorder at U.Va.'s McIntire Department of Music, organized chamber music pieces by Haydn, Corelli, Delusse, Mozart and Stamitz.
The music will be featured on Oct. 18 at a fl tie dinner in the Dome Room recognizing past donors to historic preservation as well as recognizing and honoring the William R. Kenan Jr.

Lowell Mason’s popular books of music favored the the Northeast were later printed in The Cherokee Singing Book (1846), with the words translated into Cherokee, to be used to teach the Indians the fundamentals of music.
His close friend Lowell Mason founded the Boston Academy of music, and was the first music teacher in the American public schools.
Another peculiarity, which is not, however, essential to the system, is that the names of the notes correspond to those employed in instrumental music, and are derived from the letters with variations for sharps and flats; a method whose utility is questioned by some, but which is deemed very important by others.
