The citizens of the region decided that federal rule in the meantime was probably a good idea since North Carolina as a state had given this remote region little support in its fight with the Indians or protection from criminal refugees.
John Tipton, leader of the opposition within Franklin, had been responsible for carrying out court judgment orders to seize the property of the then Governor John Sevier, including nearly all his slaves.

I worry about a governing body that supports issues like this that give them new ways to be involved in everyone's life.

 Town of Jonesborough - Visitors - A Little History
After Jonesborough was founded in 1779, a group of citizens from this and the surrounding area (then a part of the Western District of North Carolina) felt they were not represented fairly nor protected by their state leaders.
On December 14, 1784, delegates from these areas convened in Jonesborough to approve the formation of a new state, the state of Franklin, named after one of the great leaders of the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin.
John Sevier, one of the most influential leaders in the development of Franklin, was elected its first governor in March, 1785.

Many men from that expedition were later chosen as leaders of great responsibility in the great exodus from the confines of the United States; that trek of a thousand miles into the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains.
Also many of the early leaders who were later chosen in Utah Territory to head colonization and high positions of the church came from this group of courageous men.
