Compared with the architecture in many areas of Europe and in other parts of the world, the architecture of the United States developed with remarkable uniformity.
High Victorian Gothic architecture, inspired by contemporary work in England and by the critical writing of John Ruskin, appealed to an American desire for more picturesque variety in building styles.

I am impressed that both the social and architectural character of the street (which is also a kind of highway) comes from two building types: churches and car-dealerships.

The students were challenged to design a 900-square-foot home for a small, 25-by-100 foot plot of land in northeast Portland.

Byzantine church architecture in the large domed basilica form represented by Hagia Sophia in Constantinople is represented in New York only in a somewhat odd fashion by Holy Trinity RC Church on West 82nd St. Later styles - which emphasized smaller churches with domes on a square base - are more visible.
It is of interest to medievalists for three reasons: it is constructed in a medieval architectural style; it is dedicated to a medieval saint; and it is still run by a medieval religious order.

 New York Architecture Images- FRAUNCES TAVERN
Mersereau's reconstruction (following the fire of 1900) is a conjectural rebuilding of the original Fraunces Tavern, in other words, it is a 20th century interpretation of the general characteristics of Georgian Style architecture.
Fraunces Tavern was originally built as a house for Oliver de Lancey, a member of the prominent Delancey family that contended with the Livingstons for leadership in colonial New York.
On April 23, 1785, Samuel Fraunces sold his tavern, ending his 23 years as owner of one of New York City’s most famous gathering places.
