Music 101, 102, and 103 are three independent introductions to the study of music, through different repertoires and methodologies.
Music Theory I. Beginning with a study of notation, scales, intervals, and rhythm, the course proceeds through composition and analysis of melodic forms, a study of harmonic motion, an introduction to the principles of counterpoint, and the analysis and composition of complete works from several popular and classical styles.
The music of composers active in Paris from 1870 through the early decades of the twentieth century is studied along with the influences of impressionistic art, symbolist poetry, and the impact of nationalistic music from Russia, Spain, and the Americas.

This secondary concentration consists of seven courses: Music 231-232, 331-332, and three additional 200- or 300-level courses (one, but no more than one, of which may be a two-semester credit in applied music).
Students taking music lessons through Bates may earn one course credit for every two consecutive semesters of applied music, but must enroll in a course in music during the year in which they are taking lessons for credit.

An intense involvement with the world of modern dance and a predilection for cyclic rhythmic procedures are characteristics of a maverick faction of composers encompassing Anne Southam (b 1937), Michael J. Baker (b 1949), Henry Kucharzyk, Peter Hannan and John Oswald (all born 1953), and Robert W. Stevenson (b 1954).
The association of music with social comment is seen in Weinzweig's Wine of Peace and Dummiyah; in Pentland's News; in several works by Morawetz, notably Memorial to Martin Luther King and From the Diary of Anne Frank; and in Prévost's Second Quartet ("Da Pacem") and Ahimsâ.
Though the availability of several computer-based music notation programs in the 1990s enabled composers to present their music in a highly legible format, the dissemination and promotion of these scores remained quite limited.

Talisman is a trio consisting of Oleg Nels (button l3ayan accordion), Oleksandr Klima (violin) and Vadim Kulitskii (guitar, vocals).
They all studied classical music at Russian conservatories so are virtuosos playing in a classical / folk style (with a touch of jazz).
Their music is mainly self-penned and is a mixture of songs (sung of course in Russian) and instrumentals.
