Five years before, Brown’s family had left Philadelphia for a time to escape the great plague of 1793, and Brown had put memories of that visitation into The Man at Home, in The Weekly Magazine, and the earliest chapters of Arthur Mervyn, both written before his removal to New York.
What the plague had been to Brown in 1793 it remined: a chapter in the annals of his native city, mysterious, the stuff of passion, and therefore fully congenial to his temper and ideals of art.

As literature, the 1793 constitution has an extraordinary power, which found immediate recognition when Hérault de Séchelles read the draft on 10 June.
The fact that the revolutionaries of 1848 were inspired by this constitution and that it passed into the ideological armory of the Third Republic is sufficient proof of its power.

 English 510: War and Romanticism
While the impact of the French Revolution on British literature and culture has been studied at length, the impact of this first modern war—modern in terms of weapons, tactics, scope and devastation—has only recently attracted the attention of scholars of literature and culture.
This relative lack of interest in wartime Britain is surprising when one considers the prominence of the war—its images, its seductions, its savagery—in virtually every aspect of British life during the two decade period generally considered the core of British Romanticism.
Because this is a seminar class rather than a formal lecture course, active and informed contribution to class discussion is expected from all students.

The trustees, however, were not content with Williams's modest plan for a free school.
Instead, they proposed to establish a college where "young gentlemen" might receive instruction "in all the branches of useful and polite literature." In 1793, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts granted a charter to Williams College, as the second institution of higher learning in the Commonwealth.
Believing Williamstown ill-suited as the location for a new college, the trustees spent years trying to move the college to the east and south.
