He seems to have been seriously depressed, by his deafness and the resulting isolation, by the failure of his marital hopes and (from 1815) by anxieties over the custodianship of the son of his late brother, which involved him in legal actions.
The traditional four-movement scheme and conventional forms are discarded in favour of designs of six or seven movements, some fugal, some akin to variations (these forms especially attracted him in his late years), some song-like, some martial, one even like a chorale prelude.
Musical taste in Vienna had changed during the first decades of the 19th century; the public were chiefly interested in light Italian opera (especially Rossini) and easygoing chamber music and songs, to suit the prevalent bourgeois taste.

Choral music by G. Porta, Porpora, Hasse, and Galuppi and a mass setting by Porta; arias and opera extracts by Galuppi, and 30 manuscripts by Porpora, 20 of them in autograph–including his operas Siface, Didone, and Trionfo di Camilla and many cantatas and motets.

It was in 1793 that Reichardt finished his composition of Erwin und Elmire.

THERE WAS quite a stir Saturday night at UC­Santa Cruz's recently inaugurated Music Center Recital Hall, where a large segment of the region's classical-music cognoscenti turned out for the American premiere of François Devienne's newly restored 1792 comic opera Les Visitandines.
It seemed appropriate that a significant bit of musical archaeology was receiving its premiere in the area's newest performance space.
The additional music was never published, however, and remained unknown until Dudley found a manuscript copy in Lille, France.
