	Joseph Haydn
		In his early years Haydn chiefly wrote instrumental music, including symphonies and other pieces for the twice-weekly concerts and the prince's Tafelmusik, and works for the instrument played by the prince, the baryton (a kind of viol), for which he composed circa 125 trios in ten years.
		Moreover, all music that he produced while employed at this court would become the property of the prince, to such an extent that the composer was forbidden to give away copies of his own compositions to any other person.
		In becoming the Esterházy's Kapellmeister (music master), Haydn surrendered any dreams of personal freedom, but in return, received thirty years of job security, as well as the resources, musical and financial, to compose as much music as was humanly possible.

	Ludwig van Beethoven
		Until 1794 he was supported by the Elector at Bonn but he found patrons among the music-loving Viennese aristocracy and soon enjoyed success as a piano virtuoso, playing at private houses or palaces rather than in public.
		Musical taste in Vienna had changed during the first decades of the 19th century; the public were chiefly interested in light Italian opera (especially Rossini) and easygoing chamber music and songs, to suit the prevalent bourgeois taste.
		Unlike composers of the preceding generation, he had never been a purveyor of music to the nobility he had lived into the age - indeed helped create it - of the artist as hero and the property of mankind at large.

	Allegretto From Symphony No. 100
		Concert notes on folder: The second movement of the Military Symphony was perhaps the most celebrated composition of Haydn's performed during his second visit to London in 1794.
		The music, however, is not original with this symphony was was taken from an earlier work, "Concerto per la Lira Organizzata" composed in 1786 for the King of Naples.
		The wind band version was probably written after the London successes and follows very closely the orchestral symphony except for the deletion of the long coda.

		He later lived three miles from Charlottesville, left there in 1763, moved to South Carolina in 1765, and then to Rutherford, North Carolina, He and his sons Lewis, William and David fought at the Battle of Cowpens in the Revolution.
		Daniel was born in 1734 at Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and probably moved to Georgia or the Carolinas, or maybe to Pennsylvania or north of Virginia.
