The Indian 20th Division under Major-General Douglas Gracey withdrew without difficulty, mainly because two of Yamamoto's battalions from the Japanese 15th Division were delayed at Indaw in northern Burma by the Chindits and were unable to intervene.
The Indian 17th Division under Major-General David Cowan was cut off by the Japanese 33rd Division.
This was a major threat to IV Corps, and on April 13, Indian 5th Division counter-attacked, supported by massed artillery and the M3 Lee tanks of the 3rd Carabiniers.

The 17th Airborne Division was stationed in the United Kingdom from 25 August to 23 December 1944.
From 23 to 25 December, elements of the Division were flown to the Reims area in France in spectacular night flights.
On 18 January, the Division relieved the 11th Armored Division at Houffalize, pushed enemy remnants from the Bulge, and seized Wattermal and Espeler, 26 January.

After the Normandy invasion the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment was permanently attached to the division which was stationed in the United Kingdom from 25 August to 23 December 1944.
Toward the end of August, 1944 the 17th Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division became permanent units of the U.S. XVIII Airborne Corps.
Operation Varsity would be the last full scale airborne drop of World War II and the assignment went to the 17th Airborne Division with the 507th spearheading the assault dropping at the southern edge of the Diersfordter Forest, three mile northwest of Wesel.

Despite the heavy losses the division was moved up to the front by motor and reinforced by the 39th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division on July 12, 1943.
On 9 December 1943 Colonel Gavin was promoted to Brigadier General and assumed the duties of the Assistant Division Commander of the 82nd Airborne while Lt Col Herbert Batchellor assumed command of the 505th.
During the early months of 1944, units of the Division were moved to England as the allies were preparing for the assault on Western Europe.

Renamed 17th Division Ammunition Sub Park and assigned to British 17th Division.
These were mechanical transport units which moved supplies (except ammunition) from the railhead to the forward supply points, from whence they were carried forward to the troops by the horse transport units.
When the Anzac Mounted Division was formed, the service corps companies that had supported them were replaced by supply sections, as horse drawn transport was too slow in the sands of the Sinai.
