This was a Theban Dynasty which continued the culture of the Middle Kingdom.
It coexisted with the 15th Dynasty until Seqenenre Tao began to fight against the Hyksos.
Kamose, the son of Seqenenre Tao, eventually drove out the Hyksos which marks the end of the 17th Dynasty.

Manetho mentions a 7th Dynasty, consisting of seventy kings who reigned for seventy days, but rather than being real rulers, they were probably conjured up by ancient historians to symbolise the chaos of this period.
There did, however, appear to be an 8th Dynasty who governed from Memphis, although their authority would have been limited to the immediate area as the Delta had been invaded by Asiatics.
The last two rulers of this native Egyptian dynasty in Thebes, Seqenenre Tao and his son Kamose, campaigned openly against the Hyksos rulers and eventually Ahmose I, the first ruler of the 18th Dynasty, successfully drove them from power and was able to establish the New Kingdom phase.
