MODERN ARCHITECTURE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Architecture that can truly be called "modern" did not appear until the end of World War I. The seeds for modernism, however, were planted in the early 19th century, with the development of a new attitude toward the relationship between a building's form and function.
Architecture during the 1800's did not progress in the same manner as painting or sculpture.
American architecture between 1915 and 1940 was mostly in the hands of builders and academians.

Although the reign of George III extended into the 19th century, and George IV did not die until 1830, the style(s) of architecture most commonly associated with the Georgian England is at its most strongly identifiable in the period 1730-1800.
These country house estates were dotted with copies of classical temples and other allegorical architectural elements such as grottoes, bridges, and that group of oddments we call "follies".

The study of American Gothic Revival architecture has been limited generally to formal analyses and attempts to see the style as prefiguring later architectural movements.
Rather than analyze Gothic Revival architecture in light of proto-modernist innovations, this dissertation aims to place the style within the intellectual climate of its time.
Using American actor Edwin Forrest's Fonthill Castle as a case study, the third chapter delineates the connections between Gothic Revival architecture and theatrical performance, arguing that the Gothic Revival style relies on spectacle and disguise to create semi-fictional spaces in which dramatic events are staged.
