This is why monumental buildings are lacking and folk traditions have dominated architecture, especially in the use of wood, based on centuries of craftsmanship and experience with the material.
Influenced by Danish empire architecture, this strict, but harmonic classic style set its mark all over the country, especially along the southern coast of Norway, where applications in wood are found in large as well as small buildings.
Architecturally, the Police Headquarters has been followed up by several similar structures in which a sub-division of the building's main body, as in the example with the open hand, creates open spaces which can be covered in glass.

Completed in 1801, it was designed by John Kimball, Sr., one of the most highly regarded housewrights in post-Revolutionary Portland.
The McLellan House is a monument to Portland’s first “golden age,” the decades between the physical destruction of the city during the Revolutionary War and the fiscal disasters brought on by the Embargo of 1807 and the War of 1812.
Many of the architectural details in the Beaux-Arts structure are copied from the McLellan-Sweat House, and the two buildings are compatibly linked by a connecting corridor that joins the house at its back door.

They studied the art and architecture of classical antiquity together in the French Academy in Rome during the 1780s and returned to Paris at the beginning of the Revolution.
Appointed by Napoleon architectes du gouvernement in 1801, their architecture and interior design work can be found in many of the monuments of Napoleonic Paris, including renovations to the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces, and in such grand estates as Fontainebleau, near Paris.
Pierre François Louis Fontaine (1798-1863), Fontaine's nephew, was a student of architecture under Percier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1816.

 Salem Massachusetts Architecture.
This Georgian dwelling was designed by Samuel McIntire and built as a residence for Elias Hasket Derby, but the building was left unfinished when Derby purchased another residence in 1782.
The building was used as a warehouse for Revolutionary privateers until purchased by boatbuilder Benjamin Hawkes in 1801 and converted into a two-family home.
Built by John Gardner during Salem's most prosperous era, this elegant Federal town house is widely admired in the published history of American architecture for its imposing but balanced and restrained facade.

Also important in the appearance of new architecture was the increased used of glazing in 19th century buildings; metal can hold larger panels of glass than wood could.
Metal had, of course, been used in small quantities much earlier--as dowells to hold drums of columns together in Greek architecture, for example.

 Providence Architecture
The name of the cinema comes from a classic cable car that was left behind; Bilodeau planned to repair the car and display it on the roof of the building as a symbol of the cinema’s name.
The building, however is located in the historic South Main Street commercial district, neighbored by 19th century structures and 18th century buildings that survived the fire of 1801.
According to the Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission of Rhode Island, all exterior alterations to buildings in the historic district must be approved by the historic district commission to ensure that the historic character of the area is maintained.

 Kingston Architecture: Chronology
The cornerstone of the present St George's Anglican Cathedral is laid on King St E. at Johnson St. This is the first known architectural commission for Thomas Rogers (1778/82-1853).
His design is altered c1840 when the front of the church is rebuilt and a new bell tower installed by architect William Coverdale (1801-65); this work is in turn altered by an enlargement of the structure in 1891 by Power and Son.
The architectural firm of Power and Son is formed (see also the entry for 1846).

 William Strickland - Great Buildings Online
He grew up in Philadelphia, where he was exposed to and developed skills in engraving, painting, scenery design, surveying and architecture.
The Neoclassical style Strickland adopted from Latrobe was distinguished by the use of a Greek vocabulary based on Stuart and Revett's Antiquities of Athens.
Though he was not a very progressive architect in terms of construction techniques, Strickland exhibited a changing attitude towards iron, using it as a structural member.
