Have students create historical renditions of a contemporary subject and compare their works to art from the Colonial period, and how they and the artist(s) of the past addressed "the five w's" (who, what, when, where, and why) in their works, such as artist Charles Willson Peale and John Trumbull.
As a result of the lessons, the students will be able to understand people, their life experiences, and the history of eighteenth-century America through the art of the period using the three themes consistent with the artists' reflections of their daily lives.

Inspired by the landscapes of Thomas Doughty and Thomas Birch which he saw at the Pennsylvania Academy during a stay in Philadelphia from 1823 to 1825, Cole became dedicated to a career as a landscape painter.
Cole's unexpected death in 1848 at the young age of forty-seven was deeply mourned in New York art and literary circles.
Both his art and his legacy provided the foundation for the native landscape school that dominated American painting until the late 1860s.

In 1801, on her return from Russia where she stayed for six years, Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun stopped for six months in Berlin where she was lionized by Hohenzollern.
It was his success as general of the French armies during this period that led to Napoleon being vested with dictorial powers as First Consul on Dec. 24, 1799, just a little over two years after Louise became Queen of Prussia.
At the death of his father, Czar Paul of Russia, on March 11, 1801 Alexander I became Czar of Russia.

The Charles Allis Art Museum, 1801 N. Prospect Ave., is proud that the next installment of this annual series is a retrospective of her works.
Ruth Grotenrath was born in 1912 and studied with well-known artists Robert von Neumann, Gustave Moeller and Elsa Ulbricht at what is now the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in 1933 and married fellow artist and friend Schomer Lichtner the following year.
