ETH-Z gta Semper research: a critical review
Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) was not only one of the most outstanding architects of his time, he was doubtless also the first systematical anthropologist of art and architecture.
Semper globally documented one basic paradigm: the fact that fibrous and perishable materials are widely found in art and architecture related to durable materials, mostly as texture ('incrustation' principle) or structurally.
In a pioneering act, Semper concluded anthropologically that art and architecture must have had their origins in the domain of archaeologically not represented fibrous industries ('textiles').

john goodrich on french artists in rome at the dahesh
The Dahesh is inaugurating its new, roomier quarters in the former IBM Gallery space with French Artists in Rome: Ingres to Degas, 1803-1873, an exhibition celebrating the bicentennial of another institutional move, that of the French Academy in Rome to the Villa Medici in 1803.
Of course, this would be asking the Museum to chart a territory hardly explored by the Academy itself-nor, ironically, by a great many contemporary art thinkers more absorbed in issues of semiotics and anthropology.
But is this really so different from Bouguereau, who seems every moment to be watching us watch him converse with painting conventions?) As with the Academy in the nineteenth century-and some thinkers on art today-Richter's work shows no awareness of the distinction between academic and great traditional art.

 Dictionary of Australian Biography E
The South Australian government sent a vessel with fresh supplies to Fowler's Bay, and, after a rest of some days, Eyre, Barter, one of the Europeans of the original party, and three aborigines with 11 horses, started on their long journey to King George's Sound.
He came to Australia in October 1802, on 2 November was appointed a storekeeper at Parramatta, and in August 1803 became acting-surveyor-general of lands during the absence on leave of C.
Western Australia did not take part in the referendum held in 1898, and the government under Forrest (q.v.) was opposed to the proposals for federation even so late as the end of 1899.

"Gottfried Semper was born on 29th November 1803 into a wealthy manufacturer family in Altona," writes Martin Fröhlich in the cultural magazine "Du" (March issue 1999).
The first Semper museum was opened in Zurich within a year of his demise and dedicated memorials were erected in the main hall of the Federal Polytechnikum in 1887 and in the Art Academy Dresden in 1892.
In the same year, Semper was appointed – "against all possible odds" – to the board of directors of the School of Architecture at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden.

 Johann Gottfried von Herder
Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803) was born in Mohrungen in East Prussia.
Herder strikingly, and plausibly, argues that, on the contrary, beauty is not nearly as essential to art as it is often taken to be.
Herder believes, plausibly, that a work of art is always written or made to exemplify a certain genre, and that it is vital for the interpreter to identify its genre in order to understand it.
