The lack of detail in maps circa 1803 hinted at the enormous task to be faced by the Lewis and Clark expedition.
On January 18, 1803, President Jefferson sent a confidential message to Congress, stating in part, “The river Missouri and the Indians inhabiting it, are not as well known as is rendered desirable by their connection with the Mississippi, and consequently with us.
And although the president was a scholar of the sciences, his push for such an expedition was as much for political reasons as it was for advancing botany or topography.

In 1803 the United States contained 17 States, including Ohio which was admitted to the Union in that year.
1803 was also the year in which the United States negotiated the sale of the Louisiana Territory from France, although the United States would not officially take possession of the territory until March 10, 1804.
In 1803 New Spain would include those parts of the continent west and south of the Louisiana Territory.

 Louisiana Purchase
Louisianians consider the Sala Capitular one of their most prestigious settings for official ceremonies, evidenced by the fact that the final transfers of the colony were held in it: from Spain to France on November 30, 1803, and from France to the United States on December 20, just twenty days later.
However, in April 1803, just days before Monroe was to arrive in Paris, Napoleon offered to sell the United States not only New Orleans but all of Louisiana.
On November 30, 1803, Spain's representatives, Governor Manuel de Salcedo and the Marqués de Casa Calvo, officially transferred Louisiana to France's representative, Prefect Pierre Clément de Laussat, in the Sala Capitular in the Cabildo.

The "Corps of Discovery" dispatched by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 was the first scientific expedition ever undertaken by the United States-the prototype of all national scientific enterprises, including today's missions into outer space.
Not surprisingly, the expedition had its critics, and Jefferson had to persuade Congress to appropriate $2,500 for the adventure.
Jefferson, like others, believed there was a Northwest Passage to discoversome river or a series of rivers connected by a short portage over the mountains -that would take explorers to the Pacific, and make possible direct American trade with the Orient.

In 1780 Josiah was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Second Company of the Third Ulster County Regiment, [10] and was later appointed “Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the Regiment of Militia in the County of Ulster” by Governor George Clinton in 1803.
In politics, “Col.” Hasbrouck served on the national level as representative to 8th and 15th Sessions of Congress under Jefferson (1803-1805) and Monroe (1817-1819), respectively, and at the state level as member of 16th, 19th and 21st Sessions of New York State Assembly, 1792-1793, 1796, and 1798, respectively.
In one letter from 1803, Hillitje asks Hylah to “Remember my love to all the fl people, to Philip and Ben, expecially who are oldest.” Another letter to Hylah from Julia Ann Crosby of Rochester, inquires about Hylah's studies at the Litchfield Academy in 1813.

William Smith O'Brien (born 1803) entered politics in the 1820s, and sat in the House of Commons for Co. Clare, and later Co. Limerick.
In 1848 William Smith O'Brien was arrested in Ireland, on the grounds that he had traveled to Paris earlier that year in support of the leaders of the new French Republic.
Between the finish of the trial in October 1848 and May 1849 various petitions in favour of clemency for William Smith O'Brien were collected around Ireland.

He was then defeated by Jackson in another run for the presidency.
Clay resigned from the Senate in 1842, again ran for president, and finally re-entered the Senate in time to throw his considerable political skill and oratory behind the Compromise of 1850, which again prevented extremists on both sides from tearing the Union apart over slavery.

 Symposium 2002 - The Louisiana Purchase: An International Perspective
The emphasis of the sessions of this three day symposium was on the interactions of the many ethnic and national groups in the Mississippi and Missouri river valleys before and after the purchase of Louisiana by the United States in 1803.
The seminar focused on the changes wrought by the transfer of Louisiana upon colonial administrators, habitants, American Indian nations, the military, women, traders and others on both sides of the Mississippi River.
The seminar also addressed the political events leading to the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson’s dream of an expanding West, the role of Spain in administering Louisiana, early Spanish and French exploration of the West and later commemorations of the Louisiana Purchase.
