WESTERN AUSTRALIA was established when a small British settlement was established at King George's Sound (Albany) by Major Edmund Lockyer who was to provide a deterrent to the French presence in the area.
Convicts sent to Western Australia were sentenced to terms of 6, 7, 10, 14 and 15 years and some reports suggest that their literacy rate was around 75% as opposed to 50% for those sent to NSW and Tasmania.
South Australia was never a British convict colony and between 1836-1840 about 13,400 immigrants arrived in the area.

The word "Australia' had intermittently been used from the early 17th century to describe indeterrninate land masses in the southern hemisphere and had once, in the forms Greater and Lesser Australia, been used to describe a vast swath of the east coast and Pacific islands.
His general chart of Australia and 14 detailed charts of sections of the coastline were finally published in London in July 1814, the month of his death at the age of 40.
When Governor Lachlan Macquarie received Flinders' chart in 1817, he decided "Australia" was the appropriate name and began using it in his writings, giving it official sanction, and leading to its general use.

This chart was completed by Matthew Flinders in 1804, while he was a prisoner in Mauritius, following the termination in the previous year of his—and history’s first—circumnavigation of the great south land, known at that time as New Holland and New South Wales, and frequently referred to as Terra Australis.
The chart left Mauritius on 14 November 1804 consigned to Sir Joseph Banks in London.
The chart measures approximately 92cm x 72cm and is held by the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton, Somerset.

While these celebrated British and French explorers introduced southern Australia to European science, they were learning about a land that had been deeply understood and cared for by the Kaurna People for tens of thousands of years.
When Flinders posted his chart to London in November 1804, the British Admiralty rejected the name 'Australia' which he proposed, and when Flinders' chart was finally published in 1814, his title was inverted to read 'Terra Australis or Australia'.
It was formally adopted for the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.

Swymbridge is the epicenter of Yeo lineage and the name "Yeo" one of the oldest names, in contrast with the name Scott, which we now think fairly common but was really scarce in England before the mid 1700's, and then the few families centered around Somerset.
The Yeo line that Henry came from went to Australia, and the U.S.A. I have been in contact with a Richard Yeo who lives in California.
Many in Henry's family went to Australia with their cattle, with the hope of more land and a chance to spread out even more.

Robert Garran, in his history of the Federation movement describes the failure of the British to form an Australian federal government in these early years as "unfortunate, but inevitable", attributing the vast distances, lack of contact and the necessity to seek power and management for their own affairs as preventing any national outlook taking shape.
