Topic: 1805 in politics

  Excerpts
It was a "first." I stress the connection between politics and political philosophy because such a connection is not to be found in the kind of political science that tries to ape the natural sciences.
It wants to be impartial, or to be a partisan for the whole, for the common good; but that impartiality is drawn from the arguments of the parties themselves by extending their claims and not by standing aloof from them, divided between scientist and citizen, half slave to science, half rebel from it.
The political philosopher knows for sure that politics will always be debatable, whether the debate is open or suppressed, but that fact—rather welcome when you reflect on it-does not stop him from seeking a common good that might be too good for everyone to agree with.

G.W.F. Hegel -- Social and Political Thought [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The last of Hegel's political tracts, "The English Reform Bill," was written in installments in 1831 for the ministerial newspaper, the Preussische Staatszeitung, but was interrupted due to censure by the Prussian King because of the perception of its being overly critical and anti-English.
Finally, the constitution of the political state brings together in a unity the sense of the importance of the whole or universal good along with the freedom of particularity of individual pursuits and thus is "the end and actuality of both the substantial order and the public life devoted thereto" (ΒΆ 157).
Hegel also says that the other two moments of the political constitution, the monarchy and the executive, are the first two moments of the legislature, i.e., are reflected in the legislature respectively through the ultimate decision regarding proposed laws and an advising function in their formation.

 Essay V: 1800-1848
As we consider this period of American history, we must remember that the political, constitutional, diplomatic, and military history we used to study as the whole of American history is only part of the history of the American people.
But the repudiation of the Federalists in that election, exacerbated by their repeated political defeats and leading ultimately to their disintegration as a political party by 1816, suggested briefly that American public life would be dominated by one-party consensus politics.
Finally, although Jeffersonian Republicans celebrated the growing democracy of America, they still conceived of politics and governance as concerns reserved for the educated, well-bred elite; the great body of the people were relegated to the role of appreciative observers who, at election time, would reward virtuous and public-spirited officials with re-election.

The city of Rome remained under Papal control until 1870, when the Italian Army made its way into the Vatican State through the Breach of Porta Pia.
Rome was annexed, but the Pope refused to sign a treaty and sought refuge in Castel Gandolfo from where he launched his interdetto, forbidding Italian Catholics from participating in political life on pain of excommunication.
The Trentino and South Tyrol would be annexed in the following century, after 1918, thereby ending the unification process as planned by the House of Savoy under Victor Emmanuel II.

Primary elections in California are the vehicle by which such political parties select their standard-bearer.
After Proposition 198 was adopted, political parties no longer have that right and, to that extent, the consent function of elections is undermined.
Government-imposed orthodoxy, whether fostered by California's mandate that political parties allow cross-over voting or New Jersey's court order forcing the Boy Scouts to alter its views, infringes liberty and undermines the consent that gives legitimacy to government.
