From 1807 to 1814 Orelli worked as preacher in the reformed community of Bergamo, where he acquired the taste for Italian literature which led to the publication of Contributions to the History of Italian Poetry (1810) and a biography (1812) of Vittorino da Feltre, his ideal of a teacher.
In 1814 he became teacher of modern languages and history at the cantonal school at Chur (Coire); in 1819, professor of eloquence and hermeneutics at the Carolinum in Zurich, and in 1833 professor at the new university, the foundation of which was largely due to his efforts.

Some of the reasons why American literature developed along original lines and thus conveyed a message of its own to the world are to be found in the changed environment and the varying problems and ideals of American life.
The colonial literature of this period was influenced only in a very minor degree by the work of these men, for a generation usually passed before the influence of contemporary English authors appeared in American literature.
The greatest lesson taught by colonial literature, by men like Bradford, Winthrop, Edwards, and the New England clergy in general, is moral heroism, the determination to follow the shining path of the Eternal over the wave and through the forest to a new temple of human liberty.

Coverage of novels the Flowers of Literature was fairly substantial—there were, for example, notices of 28 novels contained in the volume for 1806—despite the fact that Blagdon’s introductory remarks often echo familiar critical discourse on the dubious moral and literary value of the genre.
The Flowers of Literature was published by the London firm of Benjamin Crosby and Co., which operated between 1794 and 1814, from Stationer’s Hall Court on Ludgate Hill and ‘near Paternoster Row’—establishing it firmly in the topographical centre of the London booktrade.
The object of this work is, the laudable one of bringing into contempt the ridiculous and disgusting tenets of modern philosophers, as they prevailed a few years ago, when their progress bid fair to overthrow, with the altar and the throne, the moral system of all civilized nations.

Touches of this transcendental fear are seen in classic literature, and there is evidence of its still greater emphasis in a ballad literature which paralleled the classic stream but vanished for lack of a written medium.
Yet such was the thirst of the age for those touches of strangeness and spectral antiquity which it reflects, that it was seriously received by the soundest readers and raised in spite of its intrinsic ineptness to a pedestal of lofty importance in literary history.

Benedict: Making the Modern Reader - Chapter One: COLLECTING CULTURE BEFORE THE RESTORATION
By their distinctive practice of separating previously published literature into small chunks of reading matter and arranging these according to the principles of the new text or context, each of these literary genres characterizes literature as composed of quantifiable, malleable, even mechanical units.
While commodifying literature into usable and reusable elements, this format allows both the traditional, intensive study of a few texts, and the new, comparative survey of many that a burgeoning literary market would increasingly promote.
As is the case with collections of literature, these differentiations are meaningful only by contrast with one another, and this contrast appears primarily, if not wholly, in printed literary handbooks and anthologies, not in the social or conversational use of repartee.

Accordingly, his 1807 assessment of novels, whose readers would “often be deluded by estimates of human life and happiness that are calculated upon false foundations,” seems to reveal a moralizing retreat from fiction and an abandonment of those “wild narratives of the imagination” pursued in his younger days (Brown 1807).
In a comparative essay entitled “A Sketch of American Literature for 1807,” for instance, Brown published lists of US writing under distinct generic “departments” including history, politics, military books, law, poetry and drama, and theology to parallel British publications.
