Music is danced to, art is seen in sets and costumes, literature is used to set the story, and the most obvious: dance.
In composing the music, I had in my mind a distinct picture of a puppet, suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggi.
He was also needed to help with the several meter and tempo changes, and he could simplify the music for the dancers, for they often had trouble coordinating their movements with the music that they were unaccustomed to.

Although he continued to write and record serious music, which was performed by several respected orchestras, and worked as an arranger for such pop-folk artists as Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie, Schickele's PDQ Bach albums for Vanguard, and, later Telarc Records, have remained his most recognized works.

Here was a music that was found exciting; a lively rhythmical protest (for men had been drinking of the new wine of liberty) against the dry and dreary old music; a music flattering to the sense and a relief to the imprisoned spirit.
But there was this gain at all events: music was at last listened to as music, and not alone as ritual; it was thought worth the while in itself; there was a chance that it might come to something really musical in course of time.

Grim Reapers & Haunted Melancholy: Music of Autumn
In pop music, one of the first interrogations of fear and dread occured in 1967, with The Doors' Oedipal epic "The End," which dealt with shockingly murderous and grim subject matter for the time.
The music is perfectly executed in its rustic glory by a chamber band, complete with a theramin or bowed saw that invokes spells and apparitions of dancing ghosts.
Autumnal music offers a comforting opportunity to cry in your beer, commiserate with a loved one, nostalgically recall childhood celebrations of Halloween and The Day of the Dead, or allow yourself, for a moment, to be scared witless.
