 Elymais (Elam)
In 2900 BC the Elamites had already developed a pictographic written language of their own, well before the Mycenaean and Minoan Greeks had even begun to think about creating inventories using their Linear A and B scripts.
With the fall of Nineveh in 612 BC, Elymais passed from the sphere of the Assyrians into that of the Chaldaean rulers of Babylon, who used part of the territory to forcibly relocate Jewish notables deported from the defunct kingdom of Judah.
Shortly after 190 BC a native dynasty was founded by Kamnaskires I Megas Soter, who ruled Elymais and the capital at Susa, but maintained a cordial relationship with the Seleukid court.

 MACCABEES
His son Judas, "the Maccabee," succeeded him (B.C. 166) as the leader in directing the war of independence, which was carried on with great heroism on the part of the Jews, and was terminated in the defeat of the Syrians.
Other than the book of Maccabees, there is no corroborating evidence that the Seleucids suddenly wanted to Hellenize all the peoples of their empire, it is probable that the revolt started when the Seleucids tried to establish a garrison in the Jewish heartland, where none had existed before.
In 165 BC, Judas Maccabaeus started the revolt against the Seleucid overlords of Palestine (though at this time the area was known as Judea).

Maccabees   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Maccabees were a Jewish family who fought against the rule of the Seleucid dynasty; they founded the Hasmonean royal line and established Jewish independence in the land of Israel for about 100 years (from 165 BC to 63 BC).
Beginning in the 180s BC, Seleucid fortunes certainly were declining, in the peace of Apamea the Seleucids lost virtually all of Asia Minor to the Attalids of Pergamum, around this time the Seleucids were also humiliated by the Ptolemies.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2003.12.20
For F. the major breaks come in 133 BC and in the 50s, when he sees the people of Rome finally questioning the leadership of the senate and the political families.
As a result, short shrift is given to other moments of significant change, most notably the dictatorship of Sulla and his new constitution, itself arguably the object of much of the political conflict of the last generation of the Roman Republic.
There is reason to see the political culture of the 70s BC as already significantly different from what is described by Polybius in the 150s.
