		Unlike the seventeenth century’s Cardinal de Richelieu, who believed that there was one standard of literary perfection that all writers should strive to emulate and/or approximate, she argued that literary merit depended on a number of relative factors, such as the religion, laws, morals, geography, and even the climate of individual countries.
		This tendency, most in evidence in the literature of the 1820s and 1830s, was linked perhaps to the fall of the Napoleonic ideal that resulted in the collapse of the glorious dreams of a whole generation of writers.
		For the first time in French literature, poetry becomes not an art of pure form (wherein the message is secondary to the formal poetic structure) but an art of sincere communication.
