  Classical Music (1750-1810)
A lot of music was printed for harpsichord or piano, but the harpsichord gradually faded out of use.
Finally, the music may have a coda (A direct translation is tail), which rounds off the music.
Towards the end, the orchestra pauses, and the soloist plays a cadenza (a short passage,'based on themes heard earlier, which displays the brilliance of the player.) When the soloist finishes, the soloist ends with a trill, which signifies the orchestra should come in and finish off the piece.

All of his music is either for solo piano, or places the piano in an important role.
Finally, Chopin is remembered as one of the first nationalist composers, using the themes and dances of his native Poland as the sources for his pieces (especially the polonaises and mazurkas).
In every way, Chopin was the quintessential "Romantic" composer, and Robert Schumann's initial reaction to his music ("Hats off, gentlemen, a genius") was borne out in his short but spectacular career.

Robert Schumann Biography - famous Robert Schumann Classical collection and Robert Schumann Music Reviews.
Other important chamber music by Schumann includes three piano trios, three violin sonatas and a number of shorter character-pieces that include the Mrchenbilder for viola and piano, collections of Phantasiestcke with alternative instrumentation and the cello and piano Fnf Stcke im Volkston, with other short pieces generally suggesting a literary or otherwise extra-musical programme.
The piano music of Schumann, whether written for himself, for his wife, or, in later years, for his children, offers a wealth of material.
From the earlier period comes Carnaval, a series of short musical scenes based on the letters of the composer's name and that of the town of Asch, home of Ernestine von Fricken, a fellow-student of Friedrich Wieck, to whom Schumann was briefly engaged.

History of the Piano - Music Masters, Inc.
The piano or pianoforte is a musical instrument whose sound is produced by vibrating strings struck by felt hammers that are controlled from a keyboard.
During the 18th century changes in musical taste gradually favored the piano's greater volume and expressiveness, and the instrument had largely replaced the harpsichord and clavichord by 1800.
In 1810 the double-action striking mechanism, which permits rapid repetition of a tone, was perfected.

Like many in his generation, Robert Schumann did not seem destined to become a composer, let alone one who would be so influential in the development of a new style.

Born near Warsaw in 1810, the son of a French émigré and a Polish mother, Chopin won early fame in the relatively limited circles of his native country, before seeking his fortune abroad, in Paris.
Chopin created or developed a number of new forms of piano music, vehicles for his own poetic use of the instrument, with its exploration of nuance, its original harmonies and its discreet but often considerable technical demands.
The whole body of Chopin's music is of the greatest musical and technical importance, melodies often of operatic inspiration and harmonies and forms of considerable originality.

Classical Net Review - Karaindrou - Trojan Women
(There's also a "Music for Films" compilation on the same label.) This is the first time that ECM has presented her stage music, however, and what she has written for Euripides's Trojan Women is even more arrestingly moving than what her earlier work for films had led me to expect.
Nevertheless, Karaindrou's music, far from a dry experiment in ethnomusicology, might be a channeling of Euripides's soul, or perhaps a channeling of the spirit of ancient Greece itself.
The thirty short tracks (most are about a minute in length) retain their identities, and, heard as a whole, the CD is neither disjointed nor repetitious, in spite of Karaindrou's economical style of composition.
