As a professor at the Royal Academy and a member of the Office of Works in London, he evolved a highly personal style based on classicism that also reflected his own intense interest in structural proportions and the basic geometric elements of architecture.
His most important design, the new Bank of England (1795–1827, since altered) in London, had an austere, simplified linear facade, as does the later, sparely proportioned Dulwich Art Gallery (1811–14).
