 Archaeology of Navies
The reason why UA has a greater percentage of articles on military shipwrecks versus IJNA is unclear, but the higher proportion may represent the strong archaeological record in the United States of naval sites and the interest in the historic period in which the nation's navies became well established.
Archaeology is used to both support and contradict the documentary record.
Foremost among the areas for future research are the naval shipwrecks from the American Revolution and War of 1812, especially the sea-going capital ships, since as yet none have been studied by archaeologists.

Historical Archaeology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Historical archaeology deals with the physical evidence of activities by people who also left written records of their history.
While written records have been made for thousands of years in some parts of the world, elsewhere the historical period began primarily with European colonizing efforts in the late 15th century, and accompanied the rapid spread of industrial capitalism in the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
To a large degree, historical archaeology is the study of the effects of Euro-American colonial and economic expansion on both the colonizers and the colonized.

"Records of the fort and other structures at Point Peter are thought to have been destroyed when the British sacked Washington in 1812, so the physical evidence is really the only record that remains," said Scott Butler of Brockington and Associates, an archaeology firm.
The fort was built in 1776 on orders of Gen. George Washington and in 1815 was overrun by British troops slow to get word of the end of the 1812 war.
The fort remained in use by militias until 1821, when it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
