Under French rule the only literature produced consisted of official accounts like the journal of Penicault, or the Mémoire des négociants et habitants de la Louisiane sur l’événement du 29 octobre, 1768, by Lafrénière et Caresse, of interest chiefly to historians.
It was not until after the War of 1812 that letters really flourished in French Louisiana.
The contentment and prosperity that filled the forty years between 1820 and 1860 encouraged the growth of a vigorous and in some respects a native literature, comprising plays, novels, and poems.

 Schlegel Introduction
In the lectures on the history of European literature of 1803-1804, Schlegel devoted more than half of his time to considering Greek and Roman literature.8 And in the History of Ancient and Modern Literature of 1812, the literature of antiquity still holds a prominent place.
It is indeed tempting to assume that, because he relentlessly focused on the literature of antiquity in his early writings, modernity is simply not a matter of concern.
Romanticism, accordingly, was not seen simply as a moment within which literature became conscious of itself; it was also seen as the fruition of the history of Western literature itself.

 Literature
European novelists of the nineteenth century seem to have been particularly aware of the societal origins of interpersonal strife and personal distress: money and power (in particular their lack) are the constant preoccupation of most of their fictional characters.
Twentieth century literature, on the other hand, is far more often concerned (no doubt thanks in part to Freud) with 'psychology' and 'inner worlds'.
Relatively few writers of any era, however, attempt to go beyond the immediacy of their characters' experience and actions (in my terms 'proximal' considerations) to try to expose the more 'distal' roots of the feelings and events they describe.
