 The Study of American Literature
By that, I don't mean the literature that Americans have written since Americans first existed-whether that is understood to be 1776, or 1607, or 1492, or the dawn of the Cenozoic era.
The phrase 'English Language and Literature' reflects the pamphlet entitled The Needs of the University, which Yale issued in 1871 to rescind its edict of 1828 and recommend the adoption of studies in science, history, and the modern languages.
Not a whit less important than Cox's writings to Dartmouth's recovered standing in the field of American Literature are the appointments made during his tenure, for these new members would do exactly what he had in mind: they would take the study of American Literature in altogether new directions.

Washington Irving: Biography of Washington Irving
In 1809, he wrote "A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Diedrich Knickerbocker," a burlesque chronicle, written in so quiet a vein of humor, that it has sometimes been taken for veritable history.
Having no inclination for law, he engaged in commerce with his brother, as a silent partner, but devoted his time to literature, and in 1813 edited the Analectic Magazine, in Philadelphia.
At the close of the war in 1815, he visited England, where he was warmly welcomed by Campbell, whose biography he had formerly written, and was introduced by him to Walter Scott.

Amazon.ca: Books: Tecumseh: A Life   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In both books Sugden displays intimate knowledge of his subject; Tecumseh, however, takes a much more in-depth look at this complex man, his life, and the times that shaped him, and thus should appeal to American-history buffs as well as anyone interested in a carefully crafted biography of a fascinating character.
Tecumseh's dream of a powerful pan-Indian confederacy was visionary in scope as he hoped to unite not just a few, but ALL the Indian tribes east of the Missisippi and beyond against the flood of white settlers pouring across the Appalachian Mountains.
Tecumseh came closer than any others to succeeding in that vision, but the British defeat in the War of 1812 and Tecumseh's death at the Battle of Moraviantown in 1813 ended that dream forever.

 USGS OFR 00-325: GEOLEX
The GNC has published several U.S. geologic names lexicons (Appendix 1) at regular intervals as a means of keeping the geologic profession informed on changes and current status of geologic classifications and nomenclature found in the published literature.
During the past hundred years, record keeping of geologic nomenclature has evolved from handwritten index cards into the present-day, web-interfaced relational database called GEOLEX, which is available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Geolex/.
The USGS geologic names lexicon, GEOLEX, a component of the National Geologic Map Database (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/), is a compilation of geologic names introduced into the literature from 1813 to the present for the U.S., its possessions and territories, and bordering areas of Canada and Mexico.
