 English 307
Course Rationale: The literature of the British Romantic period, roughly 1789-1832, was arguably groundbreaking.
Breaking with the accepted norms and traditions of 18th century British literature, the English Romantic writers--particularly Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Bryon, Shelley, and Keats--explored themes, ideas, and styles that brought a new emphasis to the role of literature in the human experience.
Romantic literature profoundly changed the way we look at the relationship between the author and his or her work and it continues to influence writers into the 21st century.

While the impact of the French Revolution on British literature and culture has been studied at length, the impact of this first modern war—modern in terms of weapons, tactics, scope and devastation—has only recently attracted the attention of scholars of literature and culture.
This relative lack of interest in wartime Britain is surprising when one considers the prominence of the war—its images, its seductions, its savagery—in virtually every aspect of British life during the two decade period generally considered the core of British Romanticism.
Because this is a seminar class rather than a formal lecture course, active and informed contribution to class discussion is expected from all students.

Department of German - Paper Ge 7
The period was one of rapid and far-reaching change, as the rationalism of the Enlightenment was succeeded in literature by the passion and extravagance of the Sturm und Drang, the restraint and formal perfection of Weimar Classicism, and the fantasy and introspection of Romanticism.
It was also an age of major achievements in German thought, from Leibniz's optimism of progress to Herder's defence of past ages and primitive cultures, and from the 'Copernican Revolution' of Kant's critical philosophy to the idealism of Fichte and Schelling.
Particularly important are those courses which deal with the outlines of the literature, thought and history of the whole period.

H-Net Review: Robert B. Bruce on Napoleon
Ellis does not distinguish between the Guard cavalry, Guard artillery, and the Guard infantry--nor for that matter between the Old Guard, Middle Guard and Young Guard.
The Old Guard cavalry and artillery were repeatedly used on the battlefield, however, (especially the artillery) while infantry and artillery of the Middle and Young Guard were in the thick of every major battle from the time of their inception in 1812 to their demise at Waterloo in 1815.
His discussion of Napoleon's relationship with the Vatican is particularly enlightening, and Ellis does reveal some solid scholarship and excellent analytical skills in unraveling and deciphering the fascinating relationship between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII.
