  What's American About American Music?
The choral music of Billings has continued to be sung in the South and Appalachia as part of the rural tradition of shaped-note singing.
Music, so the philosophy went, should derive from the vernacular music of the people, and by the late 1970s, most people's vernacular music was rock.
Its music should be drawn from the local enviornment, the sounds of home; its forms should be relevant to American society, not to a 19th-century European aristocracy that no longer exists.

The Importance of Musical Knowledge for the Priesthood of the Church
When we consider the great advance in musical culture, when we not the demand made for good music, we see how necessary it is for the man who is to have charge of public worship in the Church to have some knowledge of music, that he may be at least abreast of his congregation.
So every priest of the Church has the music of the Church put under his direct charge by the Church; he is enjoined to have a care of it, and to guard the worship of God from all unseemly music.
We should bear in mind that music in the worship of the Church is to serve as the vehicle of man's adoration of God, and not as a pleasing accompaniment to an otherwise tedious formality.
