  Encyclopedia: Romantic music
The era of Romantic music is defined as the period of European classical music that runs roughly from the early 1800s to the first decade of the 20th century, as well as music written according to the norms and styles of that period.
Romantic music is related to Romantic movements in literature, art, and philosophy, though the conventional periods used in musicology are now very different from their counterparts in the other arts, which define "romantic" as running from the 1780s to the 1840s.
Music was regarded as a quasi-religious experience, and the "Philharmonic" society became part of a concert as a time for deep engagement in the music, in contrast to the less formal manners of previous concert life.

Johann Nikolaus Forkel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Johann Nikolaus Forkel (February 22, 1749–March 20, 1818), was a German musician, musicologist and music theorist.
Forkel is often regarded as the founder of the modern science of musicology, for it is with him that the study of music history and theory became an academic discipline with rigorous standards of scholarship.
But it is worth noting that he wrote variations on the English national anthem "God Save the King" for the clavichord, and that Abt Vogler wrote a sharp criticism on them, which appeared at Frankfurt in 1793 together with a set of variations as he conceived they ought to be written.

 Franz Schubert
The son of a schoolmaster, he showed an extraordinary childhood aptitude for music, studying the piano, violin, organ, singing and harmony and, while a chorister in the imperial court chapel, composition with Salieri (1808-13).
Frequently gathering for domestic evenings of Schubert's music (later called 'Schubertiads'), this group more than represented the new phenomenon of an educated, musically aware middle class: it gave him an appreciative audience and influential contacts (notably the Sonnleithners and the baritone J.M. Vogl), as well as the confidence, in 1818, to break with schoolteaching.
Much of the music is of high quality (especially in Alfonso und Estrella, Fierabras and the attractive Easter oratorio Lazarus, closely related to the operas), showing individuality of style in both accompanied recitative and orchestral colour if little sense of dramatic progress.

Enlightened and Romantic German music criticism, 1800-1850
The foundational principle of the public sphere--that is, the conceptual space between the state and the private home which enables individuals to meet freely and discuss as equals matters of common interest--was not rejected by later critics.
This nationalistic approach to questions of aesthetic value had two components: it positioned all music perceived as foreign as 'other' or inimical to the values of one's own music, and it consolidated German music as a central feature of German identity.
Music criticism took on a new dimension in the 1840s, when Franz Brendel infused the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik with the Young Hegelian goal of furthering knowledge through the critical process of constructing the grand historical narrative of spirit.
