Guide to the Arthur H. and Mary Marden Dean Lafayette Collection,1520-1849
On the fourth of July, 1825 the United States gave Lafayette 200,000 dollars and a tract of land in Florida as compensation and reward for his role in the American Revolution (the Letters Patent of the United States of America making this gift known is preserved elsewhere in the collection).
Correspondence from this period also reflects Lafayette's preoccupation with the debts he accrued during the revolutions, and his efforts to reduce them through loans from the United States and by selling the lands in Louisiana which the United States government had granted him in 1804 for his wartime service.
Lafayette's role in the French Revolution was conditioned by the several aspects of his public identity, as nobleman, defender of freedom, popular hero, and soldier.

Low Countries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United Kingdom of the Netherlands ( 1815 - 1830) temporarily united the Low Countries again.
In the following century the "Low Countries" corresponded roughly to the Seventeen Provinces covered by the Pragmatic Sanction of 1549 of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, which freed the provinces from their archaic feudal obligations.
After the Seventeen Provinces declared their independence from Habsburg Spain, the provinces of the Southern Netherlands were recaptured ( 1581) and are sometimes called the Spanish Netherlands.
