FindLaw for Legal Professionals - Case Law, Federal and State Resources, Forms, and Code
In 1831, the Menominee Indian Tribe and the United States signed a treaty resolving various disputes involving land in the state of Wisconsin that was traditionally used and occupied by the Menominee Indians.
The Tribe contended that the 1831 Treaty reserved their right to hunt and fish on the lands they ceded both to the east and west of the Fox River, and that the right to fish and hunt on those lands had not been terminated by any subsequent treaty or act of Congress.
The district court dismissed the lawsuit after concluding that the 1848 Treaty abrogated the 1831 treaty-reserved use rights, that the court was not authorized to grant the relief requested on the sturgeon claim, and that the Tribe's acceptance of the 1854 reservation abrogated the Menominee's aboriginal use rights.

"Great" Polish political Emigration (1831 - 1870)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The 1831 emigres played a major role in preparations for the 1846 and 1848 revolutions in Poland and also supported, and frequently fought, in revolutions of 1848 - 1849 in France, German and Italian lands, Austria, Hungary, and the Danube principalities.
The Polish emigration of 1831 was, in the 19th century terms, a massive one, but its importance lies predominantly in the fact that, in intelectual terms, it played a paramount role in the history of post-Partition Poland.
Between 1831 and 1870, there were more than 50 political committees and associations and about 70 scientific, educational, cultural, welfare, military and social societies.

Canadian art and architecture: The Colonial Period
Among the outstanding art forms of early colonial Canada was French-Canadian wood carving, chiefly figures of saints and retables for the churches.
This art flourished from 1675 (when Bishop Laval established a school of arts and crafts near Quebec) until c.1850.
The art reached its height after the separation from France when, freed from the French Renaissance tradition, it developed a local character beautifully exemplified in such work as that in the Church of the Holy Family on Orléans Island and in the Provincial Museum at Quebec.

Hiroshige’s break from tradition was complete with the publication of his first attempt at landscape art in 1831, entitled Famous Places in the Eastern Capital.
On one such journey, in 1831 or 1832, Hiroshige set off from Edo with an entourage of horses intended for the emperor seated in the imperial city of Kyoto.
Through their application of traditional painting and woodblock techniques to new subject matters and genres, artists perpetuated Ukiyo-e’s interest in the temporal, everyday world of the middle class during the Edo period, and reiterated the concerns of traditional painting with their depiction of mood, emotion, and perspective.

Leader was born Benjamin Leader Williams in Diglis in Worcester City in March 1831.
His father was involved in the management of traffic on the River Severn, in those days before Great Britain developed the obsession with road transport, which has ultimately proved so mistaken.
Perhaps one reason for that feeling was that it meant his father giving his consent to enable him to follow art as a career, and in that way it practically decided the whole of his future life.

This paper will consider the reception of German art in England during the 1830s.
It will begin by tracing the emergence of what contemporaries called the modern German school, initially in Rome during the 18teens, and subsequently in Munich during the 1820s and early 1830s.
It will then show how these artistic developments were publicized in England not only through the reports of visitors to Italy and Germany who had direct exposure to them, but also through their extensive treatment in the English periodical press.
