THE purpose of this brief sketch is to show the humble origin of rail transportation, the mistakes that have occurred in railway operation for military purposes, the present high state of its development and its effect on the strategy of warfare.
Transportation is the corner-stone upon which the whole structure of modern civilization is reared; and the corner-stone could not be laid until the railroad was produced.
The most notable achievement of the rail transportation division of the Quartermaster General's office during the year 1865, was the transportation to their homes of the Armies of the West and of the Potomac after their review by the President and his Cabinet.

 The Pennsylvania Railroad
He discarded the old wooden rail or stone stringer plated with scrap iron then in general use, and designed a crude but practical anticipation of the T-rail which, with slight variations in shape and modernization in size and weight, is still the standard design of railway tracks to-day.
The first lengths of rail for the pioneer line were received by ship from England early in 1831, and the first piece of track, five-sixths of a mile long, was laid during the summer of that year from Bordentown northwards, in the direction of Hightstown.
The rail was attached to the stones by a newly devised hook-headed spike, the forerunner of the spike now in general use.

Transport of goods to markets there was critical to the development of the region's economy.
As a transportation system covering three states in the northeastern United States, the DLandW Railroad management acted in the 1899-1939 period to increase its efficiency in operation through larger equipment and to diversify from its reliance on the transportation of anthracite coal.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century increasing trade called for improved transport, and this led to the construction of Austria's first railway.
Gerstner advocated a horse railway from Linz to Joachimsmuhle, but left the project in the hands of his son, who in September, 1824, was granted by the Emperor Franz I the exclusive right of building a wood and iron road between Mauthausen, on the Danube, and Budweis (now called Ceske-Budejovice).
It was built to a gauge of 3 ft. 7-1/2 in., and had a ruling gradient of 1 in 120.

The Strasburg Rail Road was incorporated by a special Act of the Pennsylvania Legislature.
The same year, an 1882 Victorian train station was purchased in East Petersburg, PA and moved in sections to Strasburg where it was reassembled.
The Strasburg Rail Road celebrates “40 Years of Steam.” Engine 31 recreates its first run with William Moedinger’s son Linn at the throttle.

Four stops on the MAX light rail system on the east side of the river are now designated as "fareless," and they are next door to the Lloyd Center Mall, the Rose Garden arena and the expanding Oregon Convention Center.
The expansion of free public transport was designed in large measure for convention groups, which place delegates in the hotels downtown and rely on quick light rail shuttles to and from major meeting sites on the other side of the river.
This is the bridge that connects the light rail in its run between the airport and downtown.

In 1835 a rail charter was granted by the Connecticut Legislature to an enterprise known as the "Fairfield County Railroad." The charter was established only to build a railroad between Danbury and Long Island Sound.
Raising the necessary construction funds, $230,000, proved difficult for the size of the population the rail line was to serve.
In October of 1970, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (Conn DOT) and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York (MTA) entered into an agreement effective 1/1/1971 to oversee the operation of the New Haven Line by Penn Central and to jointly fund the operating deficit.

It was chartered in 1832, and was opened from the South Ferry to Jamaica, a distance of about twelve miles in 1836; and not long after the Long Island Railroad, chartered April 26, 1834, ran cars over the same track, reaching some of the towns in Suffolk county.
In the spring of 1832 the road was completed through the whole line, and the inclined plane being in working order, another grand excursion was given on the 14th of May, extending from the foot of Ganesvoort street, Albany, into the heart of Schenectady.
In January, 1832, the Company reported to the Legislature that the amount actually paid and disbursed in the construction of the road was $483,215, and that $156,693 would be required to complete it.

These rails were about three feet long and were flanged to keep the wagon wheels on the track.
The idea to tend a special pair of rails for the wheels of the load vehicles goes back to the time of the Romans, who were used to paving with stone blocks located in parallel channels the portion the road through where they passed the wheels.
The machinery altogether weighed six tons and a half, and it was accompanied with a tender to transport coal and water.

While the Mohawk River was also a transportation conduit, it was not until the Erie Canal was constructed under Governor DeWitt Clinton in the 1820's that transportation to and from the west of the Capital District progressed substantially.
The Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road, the first railroad to be chartered in New York State (April 17, 1826) and the first to begin operations (August 9, 1831) with its famous "DeWitt Clinton" locomotive, was the earliest predecessor of today's Conrail.
On the open or private right of way there was exposed third rail running along the track on the outside of one of the running rails and elevated a little in distance from the ground so the third rail shoes of the electric cars and locomotives could slide along it.

In part as a response to criticism from businesses and the public that the mails, then moving by horse and stagecoach, were too slow, the postmaster general in the early 1830s decided to put the mails on trains.
On December 5, 1832, Slaymaker and Tomlinson, stage route contractors of the time, also began carrying the mail by rail from Lancaster to West Chester, Pennsylvania, marking the official beginning of the use of rail by the U.S. Post Office department to transport the mail.
Records about the work performed by clerks on railroads in the early days are meager, but it is thought that there was a gradual development in the scope of the work up to 1864, when all mail in transit began to be distributed in railroad cars.

 Early Railroads
Cars and carriages to transport goods and people were pulled by horses along tracks or sent down hills--and then pulled up again--from the 1810's.
Unfortunately, its first trip was its last; the rails were unable to support the seven ton weight of the machine, although Horatio Allen, its backer, ran it at ten miles an hour along to tracks to "deafening cheers" of the watching crowd.
By 1834, the entire track was opened, although power was furnished for a number of years by horses and mules, as it was on many lines, rather than the still experimental steam engine.
