The growing conflict between proslavery and antislavery forces in the United States was intensified by the acquisition of new territories from Mexico and the ensuing argument over whether or not slavery would be permitted in those territories.
For Lincoln, the defeat was not a significant political setback.
The party was formed about 1834 by members of the defunct National Republican party and others opposed to the policies of President Andrew Jackson.

Politics in Britain after the end of the Napoleonic wars was largely the concern of the landed Aristocracy, who dominated both Houses of Parliament.

JULES ARMAND STANISLAS DUFAURE (1798-1881), French statesman, was born at Saujon (Charente-Inferieure) on the 4th of December 1798.
He became an advocate at Bordeaux, Where he won a great reputation by his oratorical gifts, but soon abandoned law for politics, and in 1834 was elected deputy.
In 1839 he became minister of public works in the Soult ministry, and succeeded in freeing railway construction in France from the obstacles which till then had hampered it.

The Poor Law Amendment Act (1834), inspired by utilitarian and malthusian principles (its architects were Edwin Chadwick and Nassau William Senior, both disciples of Jeremy Bentham, the founder of utilitarianism), was based on notions of discipline and frugality.
It was his report which would lead to the introduction of the 1834 Act.
Thompson believes the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act was "perhaps the most sustained attempt to impose an ideological dogma, in defiance of the evidence of human need, in English history".
