		In 1968, Peter van de Kamp (1901-1995) at Sproul Observatory detected a flare from what was presumed to be a dim companion that was two magnitudes fainter than the primary.
		In 1998, nine Sol-type stars (naked-eye objects Omicron Aquilae, Kappa Ceti, and Pi1 Ursae Majoris, as well as MQ/5 Serpentis, UU Coronae Borealis, S Fornacis, MT Tauri, BD+10 2783, and Groombridge 1830) were observed to have produced superflares, on average, about once per century.

		It is one of the most beautiful double stars of the sky, a golden star easily distinguishable in a small telescope from its blue companion.
		In 1838, this star had the highest known proper motion of any star in the sky; this was taken as evidence that it was relatively nearby and it was accordingly chosen as the first star (other than the Sun) to have its distance measured.
		It is 11.4 light years away, one of the closest stars to our solar system.

		Parallax is the apparent change in the position of a star that is caused only by the motion of the Earth as it orbits the Sun.
		Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel first detected the parallax "motion" of a star in 1838 observing the star 61 Cygni (this was definitive proof that the Earth orbits the Sun, and not the other way around).
		It is the larger star at the end of the handle of the Little Dipper (Ursa Minor).

		The Big Dipper is the most famous asterism in the larger constellation of URSA Major.
		Later, in 1838, Bessel, assuming that the rapid apparent motion indicated that the star was relatively close to the Sun, made the first successful application of the parallax method for measuring the distances of stars by trigonometric means.
		Working at the limits of instruments at that time he measured a parallax of 3 tenths of an arc-second which indicated a close distance of about 10 light-years, a remarkable accomplishment.

		A stone building was erected in 1844, which still stands, about a mile north of Ursa, Illinois, as a monument of this church, which ceased to meet regularly in about 1890.

		About a century after Bradley's achievement, in 1838, the German astronomer and mathematician Friedrich Bessel observed a parallax of 1/3-arc second on the star then known simply as 61 Cygni.
		This means that as the earth moves around the sun in its orbit, 61 Cygni appears to trace out a little oval that is 2/3 of an arc second in width.
		Only the outer two, Benetnasch (eta Ursae Majoris) in the east (upper left here), and Dubhe (alpha Ursae Majoris) in the west (lower right here), are not part of this group.
