Among his acquaintances was the New York merchant, Luman Reed, who commissioned him to create "The Course of Empire, 1836 "(New-York Historical Society), a five-canvas epic that depicts the cyclical development of a society from a savage wilderness to a grand and luxurious state, to a condition of corruption and destruction, and finally to dissolution.
Cole's unexpected death in 1848 at the young age of forty-seven was deeply mourned in New York art and literary circles.
Both his art and his legacy provided the foundation for the native landscape school that dominated American painting until the late 1860s.

The drawings are seldom displayed due to their sensitivity to light - some of them have not been shown in public for many years.
From 22 July to 18 September 2005 a large number of original drawings for a comic strip adventure, Agent 327, Dossier 18, Van Gogh's ear by Martin Lodewijk, are on show at the Van Gogh Museum.
Apart from making autonomous works for the art market, late-nineteenth-century artists also produced large quantities of prints for more prosaic purposes, including cabaret posters, theatre programmes, invitations and menus.
