 Modest Mussorgsky
Boris Godunov, in particular, was reshaped and repolished, with drastic cuts, wholesale rewriting and rescoring, insertion of new music and transposition of scenes.
It was only many years later that, with a return to the composer's original drafts, the true nature of his rough art could be properly understood, for Mussorgsky shared with some of the painters of his day a disdain for formal beauty, technical polish and other manifestations of 'art for art's sake'.
His desire was to relate his art as closely as possible to life, especially that of the Russian masses, to nourish it on events and to employ it as a means for communicating human experience.

More music was written for it in solo, for voice and in ensemble than any other instrument.
Stretching from roughly 1600 to 1750 (the death of J.S. Bach) this era in music saw the pinnacle of the unaccompanied musical suite, sets of dances written to exploit the technical and expressive depths of an instrument.

This first documented performance of Chopin's music in America was followed by Rakemann's public debut on October 16th, when he played a "Notturno and Two Mazurkas."[2] Thus, Chopin was introduced in America through genres valued especially for two outstanding attributes of his musical style: expressive, often melancholic lyricism and musical nationalism.
Training ladies in music was considered important for the cultivation of musical taste in the population at large.
For scattered throughout these smaller towns are numbers of music teachers who have little time, and, in most cases, not money enough, to come to the large cities during the musical season, and keep themselves abreast with the progress of the world.

Prompted by the enthusiasm and delight that has greeted her musical presentations, Bogart formed the Pacific Piano Trio, with violinist Michael Yokas, a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and cellist Gretchen Egen, who holds a Master’s Degree from the San Francisco Conservatory.
Music historians believe that this performance of the Foote’s Trio No. 2 was probably the first time the work had been presented in the Bay Area since 1911 when the composer himself was at the piano.

Schubert's Music Drama "Lazarus" by Steve Gerber
The recitatives freely incorporate many types of musical declamation and instrumental accompaniment that always support the meaning of the text and the underlying mood, and alternately keep the work moving ahead or allow orchestral commentary as needed.
Schubert's music for Lazarus is remarkable…consisting of recitative, arioso, declamation and aria mingling in a rich and uncommon manner…
Remember, too, that although the libretto presents Christian religious beliefs and sentimental theology, it is also "about" the mutual affection/shared values of a circle of friends as a source of comfort in the face of death-certainly of importance to Schubert, recognized by friends for his compassion.

Jerry Garcia Band - Pure Jerry - Theatre 1839 - July 29-30, 1977 (Album Review)
Not only was the Grateful Dead once again firing on all cylinders, rejuvenated by a wealth of new material, and entirely reconnected after its lengthy hiatus, but Garcia’s solo project also had coalesced considerably around the 18-month existence of its then-current line-up.
Of course, the big difference between the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band was that where the former typically utilized its sets to fuse songs together as a means of sculpting an organically intertwined whole, the latter delivered each selection as its own self-contained entity.
For certain, the bright, clean, crisp, and soulful sound of Garcia’s guitar sang proudly throughout the Theatre 1839 concerts, and no matter how far the relaxed grooves concocted by his backing band drifted out of focus, it was he who consistently put them back on target and guided them forward with his infectiously incendiary intensity.

Lowell Mason (1792-1872) began compiling and editing a collection of sacred music in 1819-20 while living in Savannah, Georgia, where he worked as a bank teller in addition to part-time service as a church musician.
After failing to persuade publishers in Philadelphia and several other cities to print his work, he submitted it to Dr. George K. Jackson, organist of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, for his consideration.
In Ives' arrangement of the song, the accompaniment, taken from the first movement of his Fourth Symphony (1909-1916), provides a striking contrast to Mason's melody.
