1840 US Census, Aroostook, Maine: transcriptions
The Sixth Census of the United States, undertaken in 1840, was a head of household census; that is, it recorded the name only of the heads of families; the rest of the information was recorded in terms of numbers of people within households, without names.
The census data is supposed to be as of June 1, 1840, the date on which census enumeration began; the census in Aroostook County seems to have been completed by the end of September 1840.
In addition to townships that are in the County of Aroostook, the 1840 census includes communities that are now in Madawaska County, New Brunswick (for an explanation, see Notes on the census of the Madawaska Settlements North and South of the St.John River).

Unique to the 1840 census was an array of questions concerning a person’s occupation, including persons engaged in mining; agriculture; commerce; manufacturing and trades; navigation of the ocean; navigation of canals, lakes, and rivers; and learned professionals and engineers.
As a result, the 1840 census was the first to list the name of another person living in a household other than the head of the house.
Thus, the area of the United States in 1840 was everything except the southwestern quarter of the present-day area from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
