Short Stories and Chronicles in French Canadian Literature (1840-1912) - Short stories and Chronicles in Quebec ...
French literature, to whatever climate it be transplanted, must produce its conteurs, its nouvellistes and its chroniqueurs, who express in a light form, generally humorous but sometimes dramatic, caprices of the imagination or picturesque aspects of popular life.
The literature that we have been describing is chiefly notable for its method and clearness, and for the enthusiasm for ideas and the delicacy of feeling that are qualities of the French mind.
Yet it must be acknowledged that, taken as a whole, the literature is indeed Canadian, and that in it the life of the people is reflected and perpetuated.

Journal of Social History: The Leisure Ethic: Work and Play in American Literature, 1840-1940. - Review - book review
Gleason's examination of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature through the prism of changing ideologies of work, play and leisure yields both insightful readings of important texts and intriguing questions for social and cultural historians.
Gleason begins in the 1840s, noting that Thoreau's vision of self-cultivation as an escape from the deadening patterns of work and social life in antebellum America seemed to exclude the Irish immigrants then arriving in large numbers to serve as a labor force for an emerging industrial society.
Considering Gleason's command of sources on play theory, his efforts to place the literature he studies in its social context, and the genuine insights he offers, one must answer in the affirmative.

 The Study of American Literature
By that, I don't mean the literature that Americans have written since Americans first existed-whether that is understood to be 1776, or 1607, or 1492, or the dawn of the Cenozoic era.
The phrase 'English Language and Literature' reflects the pamphlet entitled The Needs of the University, which Yale issued in 1871 to rescind its edict of 1828 and recommend the adoption of studies in science, history, and the modern languages.
Not a whit less important than Cox's writings to Dartmouth's recovered standing in the field of American Literature are the appointments made during his tenure, for these new members would do exactly what he had in mind: they would take the study of American Literature in altogether new directions.

The tables of contents of histories also imply differing views of how American literature should be "told": as an authoritative historical chronicle (Tyler); as expressions of important ideals, themes, and unities (Parrington, Pattee, and Spiller); or as a reflection of both the unities and multiplicities of American cultures (Elliott and Bercovitch).
Because literary histories strongly influence the editors of literary anthologies (indeed the editorial boards often overlap), it is not surprising that many of the differences in the tables of contents of the histories have their equivalents in the anthologies.
In 1919, one year before the formation of the MLAÕs American Literature Section, the substantial number of authors (more than 100) represented in Fred Lewis Pattee's anthology reflects an understandable desire to announce that there was enough American literature to justify courses and extensive study.

Cynthia Lawford, On Richard Cronin, _Romantic Victorians: English Literature, 1824-1840_ - Romantic Circles ...
He blames and credits the period itself: "It is, of course, its failure to achieve a single distinctive character, and its resistance to having one thrust upon it, that has left the literary period from 1824 to 1840 so vulnerable to the great imperial powers that adjoin it" (259–60).
But when Cronin looks at the London literary world, he sees an unfair market that did much to keep talent at bay, with the very best poets having to wait until the period was over to have their big successes.
The immodesty of 1820s and 1830s writers is easily observed, just not in those moments when one would least expect it, when they were reflecting on the work of those who had claimed so much for themselves and were gone.

Reading and writing will take place as students read the literature, watch the films, and then offer their analyses and opinions on the issues.
By these means, it is hoped that students will not stand outside of literature and history, but realize that the relationship between literature and history is a deep and ongoing process of which they are a part.

The leisure ethic: work and play in American literature 1840-1949 by William A. Gleason
For many Americans, the final years of Nineteenth Century were a period in which they faced the erosion of the work ethic their fathers had known.
Instead, with the growth of corporate capitalism and its emphasis upon modernising the industrial process through what Frederick Winslow Taylor described as "scientific management" of the workplace, workers frequently found themselves trapped and unable to escape the day to day drudgery of life in the factory.
The central thesis of Gleason's argument in The Leisure Ethic is that throughout this period, nowhere was the debate over play and play theory contested more strenuously than in the literature of the period.

The authors during the movements concentrated on reflecting the ideas (of the corresponding movement) to the reader in a symbolic way through literature.
The literature builds the idea of humanity and nature in different perspectives, which reflects the principle ideas of both the movements.
