Although Henry never ceased thinking of himself as a research scientist and educator, thereafter his chief roles were those of science administrator and de facto advisor to both the executive and legislative branches of government on all aspects of science and technology.
Although some Administrations were more friendly to science than others (the Fillmore Administration was particularly active scientifically), it was often the individual Secretary who decided the role of science in his area of responsibility.

 Thoreau and Science
But even as he tracks science beck to the scientists, and recalls his earlier, Baconian belief that the "poet uses the results of science and philosophy, and generalizes their widest deductions," he goes on now to formulate his clearest understanding of the importance of method.
Thoreau's grasp of science and it's procedures during the years 1846 and 1847 is very much like Darwin's when the latter says that "science consists in grouping facts so that general laws or conclusions may be drawn from them." It is not quite so easy, of course.
His attitude toward science is now quite complex, indeed two-sided, because he is, from this time in his life onward, both a person interested in science and scientific methods, interested in knowing nature, and a writer or artist whose main aim is to express, describe or tell nature.

 Problem-based Learning in Science
The theme of science education reform is to understand science as ways of thinking and doing as well as bodies of knowledge.
In science, you often pursue directions that are different from your primary focus and wind up discovering things that might be related, like a gene that's important in the fruit fly or worm that's also found in humans.
Above all, Gallagher (1995) emphasizes, PBL is a curricular and instructional approach which successfully resolves the seemingly contradictory demands of science education reform in a way that is true to the discipline of science, its process, and the larger goals of educating an independent reasoning citizenry.
