  God and Music
From the ancient Pythagorean "music of the spheres to the "harmonies of nature" that have guided inquiry through the ages, we have collectively sought the song of nature in the gentle wanderings of celestial bodies and the riotous fulminations of subatomic particles.
Music is as necessary for humankind as it is for birds.
As he spoke thus, accompanying his words with the music of his lyre, the bloodless spirits wept; Tantalus did not catch at the fleeting wave; Ixion's wheel stopped in wonder; the vultures did not peck at the liver [of Tityus]; the Belides rested from their urns, and thou, O Sisyphus, didst sit upon thy stone.

Beyond the Veil: Persian Traditional Music
The music of Iran has changed considerably in the past 25 years, which incidentally is the period of the Islamic Revolution and the establishment of theocracy in Iran.
While the music and culture of the old Persian empire deeply influenced and enriched the life of the Arab countries, musicians themselves were faced with condescension from Islamic society and often persecution from the government.
Musical practices did not have any continuity during long periods of time and one of the most socially comfortable and accepted forms of music was singing the verses of the Quran (Koran) without any instrumental accompaniment.

 Norsk Musikkinformasjon: Music and Dance
The music found its form in close cooperation with the choreographer, and during the process Synne Skouen had the same experience as other ballet composers before her: time, and the concept of time, suddenly take on an entirely different dimension than in the concert hall.
Music for dance must breathe, and breath, in purely compositional terms, must be given organic form.
Norwegian ballet music is seldom heard abroad, but Åsmund Feidje, the rock guitarist who became house composer at the National Theatre after his band, Rain, provided the music for a play there in 1969, has frequently been used by the free dance groups.

Music as literature became such a quintessentially Romantic concept, and the concert overture (such as Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet), and its offshoot, the tone poem, became so common in the 19th century that it is easy to forget that this one overture started it all.
Spontini and Berlioz had already used it in serious music, and it would have an illustrious career in the orchestra for a few decades before the even newer tuba supplanted it.
In the play, the subtle but majestic beauty of the music is a sublime description of the scene of sleeping lovers, but also an incongruous setup for a visual gag: when it ends the curtain opens on the ridiculous sight of Titania, the fairy queen, in her bower with the ass-headed Bottom.

Unlike the pioneer blues and jazzmen of the 1920s—whose contributions to American music are duly documented and appreciated today—the achievements of their forgotten predecessors are all but erased from history: the sound too limited, the grooves too noisy, the words too painful.
Beginning with the minstrels who played "Negro" music on stage in flface in a spirit of parody, Wondrich traces the evolution of hot music into ragtime ("Coon" music, it was called), blues, and jazz.
Much later hot music is preserved on sound recordings, which Wondrich references while discussing major performers and composers (a CD containing some of the music will be released simultaneously with the book).
