During the antebellum era, that period of the nineteenth century that preceded the Civil War, New Orleans was the largest city in the South and the fifth largest city in the nation.
Many former Whigs in Louisiana and other southern states joined the American party, whose members were called "Know-Nothings" because when asked about their secretive rituals, they replied, "I know nothing." The American party was anti-Catholic and anti-foreign, but Louisiana Know-Nothings downplayed the first and emphasized the latter.
State monies were never adequate to operate the school, and in the 1880s it became the private Tulane University with a large gift from philanthropist Paul Tulane.

 Florida - Current Issues
The Florida State Library and Archives Division is now part of the Department of State, and is responsible for the State Library, the State Archives, state record keeping and library development services/grants programs for public libraries throughout the state.
The state Library of Florida (Bureau of Library and Network Services) is slated to close effective July 1, 2003, with the layoff of all 36 employees in that unit.
The antecedents of the State Library began with Statehood in 1845, and the creation of what became the State Library was among the first 15 acts of the new state's legislature.

She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time.

 Narrative History of Texas Annexation - Texas State Library
The Convention voted to accept the United States' proposal, and the Annexation Ordinance was submitted to a popular vote in October 1845.
The proposed Annexation Ordinance and State Constitution were approved by the Texas voters and submitted to the United States Congress.
The United States House and Senate, in turn, accepted the Texas state constitution in a Joint Resolution to Admit Texas as a State which was signed by the president on December 29, 1845.

If southern states hoped to rejoin the federal government they had to accept the 14th Amendment (the Civil Rights Act of 1866) and they had to rewrite their constitutions so all adult men were able to vote.

In 1788, North Carolina rejected the United States Constitution because of the lack of necessary amendments to ensure freedom of the people; however, on November 21, 1789, the state adopted the constitution, becoming the twelfth state to enter the federal union.
State leaders improved education and created the State Highway Commission to expand roadways with a pioneer road building program was instituted which ultimately caused the state to be known as the "Good Roads State.".
Traditional industries seem to be doing well, but state leaders are striving to attract new businesses to the state.

Davis, who was soon to become President of the Confederate States of America, was not the ultimate winner of the convention (Stephen Douglas was), but Democratic Party leaders were angered over Butler's bolt from his Breckenridge position.
Even the 1889 gift of Butler's portrait to the State of New Hampshire was a controversial event, and by far the most colorful presentation of a portrait to the State.
The painting was accepted for the State by Governor David H. Goodell, accompanied by Charles R. Corning, chairman of the State Library Commission and a well-known historian.

Morris, the head manager of all, came to the United States in 1866, and in 1878 opened a small retail store at 408 Main street, with his brother, L. Morris, in partnership, and by hard work and honest dealing have established a splendid business.
Northrup was married at Wyandotte, at the Methodist Mission, November 27 1845, to Margaret, the accomplished daughter of Thomas Clark, one of the chiefs of the Canada branch the Wyandot nation.

While the spiritual leader depended on the emperor for protection and for backing in ruling Tibet, the conquering emperor depended on the lama to provide the legitimacy for his rule of the Mongol Empire.

This town is located in the northern part of the County, in the Kansas River Valley, at the junction of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, with the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Kansas Railroad.
He was a member of the House of Representatives of the first State Legislature, and was State Senator during the years 1867 and 1868.
When the rebel General Price, threatened to overrun Kansas in the fall of 1864, he organized a company of Shawnees, consisting of every adult male member of the tribe, except one, on the reservation, and those who were already in the volunteer service, and led them on a number of dangerous and successful scouting expeditions.

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Leaders of an independence movement in Texas are absurdly twisting history to make their claims sound factual, says a Ball State University historian.
A group calling itself the Republic of Texas contends that the annexation of Texas as a state in 1845 was illegal, that Texas should be an independent nation, and that the group's leaders constitute the legitimate government of the nation of Texas.
Recent kidnappings and other efforts by the Republic of Texas organization to force a referendum on independence are a slap in the face to the original founders of the state, Doyle said.

Erected circa 1845, the present structure is surviving south third of a Federal-style building.
