In 1847 alone, the year of the Great Famine, over 90,000 Irish immigrants arrived in Canada, which at the time had a population of approximately 1.5 million people, with a roughly even split between Francophones and Anglophones[ii].
The overwhelming majority of Irish immigrants settled in the colony of Upper Canada, later known as Ontario, and there the proportion of Irish-born that lived in the five main towns (Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Kingston, and London) was only marginally higher than the 8.2% of the population of the colony that lived in the urban areas[v].
The proportion of Irish-born in the five towns of Upper Canada was 9.5% in 1871.

 The 1847 Issue
The firm was formed, with its 1847 partners, in 1832 as a successor to Durand, Perkins using the name of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Co. The 'and Co.' was dropped in 1835, while Edson's name was added in 1847.
The March 20, 1847 proposal was to engrave steel plates without charge and to keep them in repair as well as to furnish the postoffice with stamps at the rate of 25¢ per 1,000 stamps.
The 1847 stamps have not been forged very successfully save for an excellent counterfeit of the 10¢ modeled upon a right pane spur position that was made by Jean de Sperati; however, it was printed by offset not gravure as in the originals.

Died on Friday morning last, at 7 o'clock in the Hospital of the Hotel Dieu, (Montreal) from fever contracted at the Immigrant Sheds, the Rev. JOHN RICHARDS, Priest, and Econome of the Seminary of St. Sulpice of Montreal, aged 60 years and 5 months.
The deceased was born in Alexandria Diocese of Baltimore, United States, on the 21st of February, 1787 --came to Montreal in 1809--was ordained Priest on the 25th July 1813--and became attached to the Seminary on the 17th February 1847.

Large numbers of the emigrants on almost every ship departing Ireland for Canada had typhus when they boarded, and as the ships continued on, with the passengers packed together (often the ships were illegally over packed) in filthy conditions, with no facilities for washing, the disease spread like wildfire.
British law called for the ships to provide seven pounds of food a week for each passenger, often they got less, and even that was sometimes inedible.
Some say as many as 25,000 died either en route to or shortly after arriving in Canada in 1847, fully, one out of every four who began the trip.
