A state government is the government of a subnational entity in nation-states with federal forms of government, which shares political power with the federal government or national government.
States currently utilizing parliamentary systems are denoted in orange and red—the former being constitutional monarchies where authority is vested in a parliament, and the latter being parliamentary republics whose parliaments are effectively supreme over a separate head of state.
A state of the United States (a U.S. state) is any one of the fifty states (four of which officially favor the term commonwealth) which, along with the District of Columbia, form the United States of America.

The emperor or huangdi (皇帝 in pinyin: huang2 di4) of China was the head of government and head of state of China from the Qin dynasty in 221 B.C. until the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911.
Elsewhere in the state, especially in the west, antislavery sentiment was strong in the early 19th cent., and following the slave insurrection (1831) led by Nat Turner the house of delegates voted down a bill to abolish slavery by the narrow margin of seven votes.
The State constitution of 1846 established a single Board of Prisons to oversee all State prisons, and in 1876 this board was replaced by the Office of Superintendent of State Prisons.

 The Constitutional History of New York
Charles O'Conor, for many years one of the leaders of the New York bar, devoted his great talents to the work of the Convention, giving to it his close attention, and bestowing on it the results of a large experience in the practice of his profession.
It provided for dividing the state into not less than eight not more than twelve districts, in each of which a judge of the court of appeals should be elected.
One ground of criticism against the court of errors, stated in the Convention of 1846, was that the court had never declared a statute unconstitutional.
