		Three courses in a secondary literature, that is, a literature written and taught in a language different from that of the primary literature.
		Literatures of the World—Seven literature courses, at least five of which must be upper- division—usually 1) a two- or three-course lower-division sequence and 2) five upper-division courses with a single unifying theme.
		Graduate students in literature are required to develop the ability to read literary and secondary texts and—when appropriate—to follow seminar discussions or lectures in a second language, a language other than the one in which the literature of their intended specialization is written.

		In this course students explore the contributions of women authors to literature by reading and analyzing works by women from divers eras and cultures; these works represent the primary traditional literary genres of fiction, poetry, and drama, as well as such genres as autobiography, testimonio, diary, oratory, and essay, as appropriate.
		It examines the development of this national literature in the contexts of British cultural and intellectual history and of Western literary tradition.

	Brief Timeline of American Literature and Events:1850-1859
		At the Nashville Convention, delegates from nine Southern states gather and agree to defend the rights of slaveholders and to adopt what they consider a moderate position by extending the 36' 30" dividing line of the Missouri Compromise, actions rendered moot by the Compromise of 1850 and, later, by the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
		Compromise of 1850 admits California as a free state; New Mexico and Utah territories are organized with no restrictions on slavery until they apply for statehood.
