He studied music at the Séminaire de Québec along with academic subjects and theology.
In 1825 he began teaching six children in his presbytery, thus founding what was to become in 1834 the Collège Jaune, in 1840 the Ste-Thérèse Seminary, and eventually the Lionel-Groulx Cegep.
He was deeply interested in music, possessed a pleasant voice, and was knowledgeable.

 Johannes Brahms
In 1853, on a tour with the Hungarian violinist Reményi, he met Joseph Joachim and Liszt; Joachim, who became a lifelong friend, encouraged him to meet Robert Schumann.
In the piano music, for example, which chronologically encircles his vocal output, the dividing lines beteen ballade and rhapsody, and capriccio and intermezzo, are vague, such terms refer more to expressive character than to musical form.
Of the other chamber music, the eloquent pair of string sextets, the serious C minor Piano Quartet op.60 (known to be autobigraphical), the richly imaginative Piano Quintet and the fluent Clarinet Trio op.1l4 are noteworthy.

The Top 100 Classical Music series is a must have for novices of classical music, or someone already into the classics but wishes to amassa an "essentials" collection.
The collection is well designed for introducing the listener to a large variety of music, with its broad range of composers and types of music.
However, the interpretation of the music is hardly existant, and many of the pieces sound rather dull and uninteresting.

Music Classification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Exception: Main entry for videorecordings of musical performances is almost always title according to current rules; follow this rule in creating catalog record, but create call number cutter as if the piece were a sound recording.
For purposes of this outline, "world music" is a very general term for items MIT classes under "F", which includes United States folk music, folk and popular music of non-United States countries, and international collections of folk music.
For world music headings new to the catalog, the cataloger sometimes resorted to consulting an atlas, then determining what larger continent a country is associated with (which can be especially problematic for islands, and much of the focus of world music study and teaching is on Pacific Island music).

The long established acceptability of the open-hole system for woodwinds may have given Sax the idea of recycling, if not saving, the keyed bugles and ophicleides--a species he helped endanger--by substituting for the brasswind mouthpiece a single reed, as is used on clarinets.
A checklist of sources for original band music in the United States is Frank J. Cipolla, "Annotated Guide for the Study and Performance of Nineteenth Century Band Music in the United States," Journal of Band Research 14, no. 1 (Fall, 1978): 22-40.
Dodworth's grouping of saxhorns and cornets is appropriate, but his general description of them as being "of large calibre," by which he means a large bore, may have been a bit casual.

 La Musica (1857-1859)
All four journals were supported by music publishers and each reflected the concerns and point of view of the supporting company.
In 1855, 1857, 1876 and 1883 four distinct attempts were made to establish a music journal of significance in Naples independent of the control of a music publisher.
Baron Giuseppe Staffa, founder and editor, was the author of a harmony and composition method and director of the orchestra at the Teatro del Fondo.

Between 1842 and 1853 four music journals of great importance were established in various cities of the Italian peninsula: in 1842 the Gazzetta musicale di Milano; in 1847 L’Italia musicale (Milan); in 1852 the Gazzetta musicale di Napoli and in 1853 the Gazzetta musicale di Firenze.
Their influence on musical life was further strengthened by the new law regulating authors’ and publishers’ rights.
This law had negative consequences on Neapolitan music publishing, which, during the period immediately preceding unification, functioned in a consistent and autonomous manner.

He was a pioneer in recorded country music and one of its most popular and prolific artists.
Generations of banjo pickers and lovers of old-time music have learned “Jordan Am a Hard Road to Travel” from Uncle Dave's recording of it, first released in 1927.

On Master of Disaster, legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson and his sons Luther and Cody (the Allstars' guitarist and drummer, respectively) team with veteran bassist David Hood to give Hiatt's music a slow simmer rather than the high voltage fans might have expected from the collaboration.
Yet the airy, organic interplay of the band provides the perfect complement for Hiatt's songs of folkish simplicity and lyrical grace.
